September 16th 1/2 day at Botany Bay and Travel to Brisbane
Botany Bay (Environmental)
We awoke early in the morning so that we could get a head start on our trip to Botany Bay. By 7am, we were all ready to move out after a quick breakfast made up of leftovers from our time at Sydney. We knew that we needed to leave early in order to get to Brisbane at a reasonable time. We left and set course toward Botany Bay.
After a half an hour of driving, we first stopped by at the Landing Lights Wetland. Here there is many different species of waterbirds that created their homes along the shoreline. There was a bird called the Black Winged Stilt, which had long legs allowing it to stand in the water and stay above other birds. Dylan commented on how he wished he could Avery decided to go off the trail to try and take a heron's feather when he suddenly sunk knees deep into mud. Dylan and Mason were able to pull him out, but not with both of his shoes. We had to spend another ten minutes digging around for them. By that time we were about ready to head back to the RV and go to our next stop, Bare Island.
As we left at 10:30, we decided to get an early lunch at the Inferno Grill and Cafe to stuff ourselves with burgers. As we were ordering, Diego found it odd that there was calamari and chips on the kid's menu. Dylan got the Super Trooper, this consisted of 160 grams of beef with 4 strips of maple glazed bacon, 4 slices of cheese, pickles, and all sorts of condiments. He was just able to finish it, and told us that he was going to explode. The rest of us also got either chicken, or burgers, and pigged out on the size of them. We were all full as we piled back into the RV, and finished heading toward Bare Island.
Roughly ten minutes later, we were at Bare Island.
Everyone wanted to go scuba diving, but we decided to wait for awhile because of our big lunches. After digesting for a half an hour, we spent money to rent scuba gear, and dove into the depths below the island. Here we found a wide assortment of sea life, ranging from octopi, to large groper. The landscape underwater was beautiful, and the amount of vibrant fish made it better. There was an eastern blue groper who seemed to be very interested in Avery, it followed him around almost the entire time that we were in the water. Dylan stepped on a stingray as we were leaving, and we all recoiled away from it. However, it just was annoyed and darted off.
As we were nearing 2 o'clock, we decided to start traveling to Brisbane so we could make it on time to the festival tomorrow. We took shifts driving for ten hours until we were close to the celebration. We had a Tartufo from Julius Pizzeria late at night, and as we drifted off into sleep, we all wondered what was in store for us the next day.
